What's New and Notable Outside the Ballpark Since Last Season
Updated April 2012
If you haven't been keeping track of the latest neighborhood news since the 2011 season ended, here's the headlines:
New Food and Entertainment Options

| |
The Bullpen on Half Street is gone, but replacing it will be the Fairgrounds, a combination shipping container market, food truck venue, and events space open seven days a week through the baseball season.
Lot 38 Espresso Bar is now serving Illy coffee products and light fare seven days a week until 7 pm at its home on the northwest corner of 2nd and L (the old "Little Red Building" site).

More Options to Come, But Probably Not Until After the Season Ends:
| |
It had been hoped that Canal Park at 2nd and M and its restaurant the Park Tavern would open in mid-June, but construction issues have pushed back expected completion to November.
| |
There's also lots of new options in Southwest (Z-Burger, Station 4) and along Barracks Row.
See the Food Options Map for details.

After a long renovation, the Foundry Lofts opened in late 2011, two blocks east of the ballpark and just north of the Yards Park. It's already more than 70 percent leased, and has Potbelly in its ground floor.
By summertime a Bank of America branch should be opening in the ground floor of 55 M Street, by the Navy Yard Metro entrance north of Nationals Park. In case you need some extra dough for those Shake Shack visits.
If you come from the south or east, the reconfigured 11th Street Bridges may be new to you--two new freeway bridges are open, and a "local" bridge will follow this summer, with more ramps to come. Watch for pattern changes!
The super-secretive National Geospatial Intelligence Agency decamped last September for Ft. Belvoir from their 1st and M digs. No imminent develoment plans (it's part of the Yards), but at least the guards with guns are gone.
Getting Started, But Still A Ways From Completion:
What's that new building across South Capitol Street at O? The Camden South Capitol apartments got underway last fall, and it's now coming out of the ground. It won't open until Summer 2013, though.
| |
Site work has started for 1212 4th St., a new 225-unit apartment building at the Yards more notable for the planned Harris Teeter in the ground floor. Vida Fitness is rumored to be a tenant as well. Completion expected in early 2014.
| |
The Park Chelsea, a 430-unit apartment building, could get underway on New Jersey Avenue later this year, but it's already resulted in the clearing of overgrown brush, which perks up the walk to and from Capitol South.
