Overview: Lower 8th Street

The section of 8th Street south of the Southeast Freeway includes the greatest remaining concentration of historic structures in the Near Southeast, and provides a strong psychological connection between Capitol Hill and the Navy Yard, though the freeway also serves to cut off this section of Barracks Row from its much more popular portion to the north.

The southwest corner of 8th and M Streets, just south of the Southeast Freeway, in January 2003. Miles Glass closed sometime in the early 2000s. (01/03)
A different view of the same location, not quite three years later. For a few years it was turned into a car service lot, but Mac's Tires closed in spring 2007. This lot and 9 others on the block were purchased in 2010 and 2011 by the National Community Church as a new location for their operations. (04/06)
The southeast corner of 8th and Virginia, when banners advertising the Admiral Condo project were hung. However, by 2008, the project's web site was gone, and the designs were being altered into the 801 Virginia office/retail development. (8/14/07)
The 1000 block of 8th Street, as seen from L Street, after an auto repair garage on the site was demolished. This is the southern end of the 801 Virginia lot. (02/06)
The southeast corner of 8th and L, showing the newly opened Chicken Tortilla restaurant, next to the Port Cafe. (10/05)
The west side of 8th Street, north of L Street, where a beer garden is under development. (09/05)
Looking north on 8th Street from M Street. (10/05)
The "Blue Castle" building at 8th and M, originally a car barn and now a multi-use building that houses Key Academy charter school among other operations. In late 2007 it was purchased for $25 million by Madison Marquette, with plans to turn the 100,000 sq ft building into a retail development. (10/05)
A 2008 view of 900 M Street, a nondescript building that was once home to a Hudson auto dealership and more recently a dialysis unit. (08/06)
The same building, after renovations were completed to create three retail spaces; Domino's moved in during late summer 2009. (9/20/09)
The northeast corner of 8th and Potomac (just north of M), back when Quizno's occupied the corner space. In July 2015 it was revealed that Barracks Row mainstay restaurant Las Placitas will be relocating here. (1/26/08)
Next door to the gray building is this nice-but-abandoned building. This land was part of the same February 2006 $9M purchase, and it too was put up for sale in 2008. (10/05)
10th Street, north of M. (10/05)
The National Capital Area Spay and Neuter Clinic opened in this renovated building on the southeast corner of 10th and L in 2007. (6/21/08)
