The Washington Navy Yard was established on October 2, 1799, and is the headquarters of Naval District Washington.

The Navy Yard's Latrobe Gate, at 8th and M; the original gate was built in 1805-06, with the three-story late-Victorian building constructed over and around it completed in 1881. (10/05)

The eastern end of the Navy Yard's portion of the Anacostia Riverwalk, as it heads toward its exit at 11th Street. The old outbound 11th Street Bridge is visible, for now. (2/26/12)
The Navy Yard's portion of the Anacostia Riverwalk was finished long before other sections, such as the boardwalk at the Yards Park. The top photo shows the view into what was then the Southeast Federal Center in April 2004; the bottom photo, in February 2012, reflects how things have changed in eight years. (2/26/12)
For a long time, the eastern entrance to the Navy Yard's Riverwalk was not particularly welcoming. (11/05)
But the stretch is now open 24/7, except for periodic closures when needed by the Navy. (2/26/12)
