Tonight WBJ is reporting that Harris Teeter--which has long been rumored to be the grocery store planned for the southeast corner of Fourth and M at the Yards--has signed a letter of intent, though Teeter isn't confirming.
But don't start making your shopping list just yet--even before the Economic Difficulties, Forest City wasn't expecting to open a building on that parcel before 2011, and that date now looks tough to meet. But there are hints in the article that maybe Forest City is rethinking the plan to have an office building topping the grocery store: "We are currently evaluating the overall development program on that parcel, which may result in a revised mixed-use concept," is the quote from Forest City's Ramsey Meiser.

Cornercopia is competing for a completely different segment than Harris Teeter. Nobody goes to Cornercopia for the same things that they go to Harris Teeter for. Right now, people still go to a regular grocery store for things that they cannot buy at Cornercopia, such as a larger variety of produce, beef, chicken, steak, pork, larger varieties of snacks, soda, etc. Cornercopia is not going to lose business to Harris Teeter anymore than they are already losing business to another grocery store.

Good news, though I was hoping that we might get a Whole Foods in our hood. We already have a HT only blocks away on Penn Ave, and there 2 others just 5 minutes over the bridge in both Pentagon and Crystal Cities...

Those who don't drive don't want to walk all the way to 14th SE to go to the HT. This will be a nice addition.

I will fight tooth and nail to keep Whole Foods out of Near SE. I'm not ready for rents to erupt just yet.

Somebody should tell Cornercopia they need to open on weekends or at least Saturdays. They just opened up and apparently they don't know they need to get customer loyalty...hint, hint if you are reading this CC.

A couple end-of-day comments:

* Whole Foods has been rumored (for about as long as Teeter was) to be talking to WC Smith about going into the eventual development at 800 New Jersey (the parking lot at 2nd and H). But clearly that's a long ways off, if the negotiating even holds.

* Cornercopia can't open on Sundays until they get their liquor license revised (hearing is in October); once that's taken care of, they will be open six days a week. But they don't plan as of now to open on Saturdays.
